it is monday, march 28. coming up on "early today," targeting christians, mainly women and children, an easter sunday suicide bomber kills at least 72 and injured 200. clash in brussels. a right-wing group of demonstrators are dispersed with water cannons after a terror attack. pope francis delivers an easter message denouncing terror amid extraordinary security at the vatican. plus, your ncaa final four headed for houston, the battle between ted cruz and donald trump heats up, and spring has sprung on this easter. "early today" starts right now. good morning. i'm darra brown. we begin in pakistan. it happened at a crowded children's park in the eastern city of lahore. the death toll has risen on at

least 72 killed, most of them women and children and more than 320 injured, many of them still in critical condition. this morning funerals are already being held for some of the young victims of yesterday's attack. we have more. >> reporter: the bomb went off near the children's ride in a park crowded with christians celebrating the easter holiday. in the aftermath, scenes of chaos. people tending to dead and injured. relatives looks for missing loved ones, women and children standing on blooding grounds. the scene at the hospital also chaotic. one after another the wounded many of them women and children carried in. the health officials saying many were in critical condition. the breakaway fax of the taliban in pakistan said they were behind the attack. a spokesman telling nbc news the christian community celebrating easter was the, quote, prime target. >> we are really, really sad and feeling so upset because it's a day of our worship. >> the u.s. national security

council said the united states condemns the attack in the strongest terms. the provincial government in pakistan declared three days of mourning and pledged to bring the perpetrators to justice. barry errant, nbc news. yesterday hillary clinton tweeted my prayers are with the victims of the horrific easter day attack in lahore. pakistan and all nations must be confront and defeat terrorists. >> the pope urged the world to use the weapons of love to fight the evil of violence. he also urged europe not to forget those fleeing war hunger and poverty and condemned countries' failure to help refugees. the pope's message comes just days after the heavy attacks in brussels and amid heavy security in st. peter square. >> next in belgium, a couple was

missing american couple died in the attack. they were dropping off stephanie's mother at the airport when the attack happened. now, she is safe. president obama called their families yesterday to offer their condolences. four americans are now confirms to have died in the attacks. a man detained has been formally charged with being directly linked to the bombing. he's been charged with terrorist murder and two other terrorist related charges. this video was posted of this man identifying himself as cheffou. two others detained face general terror charges. it is reported he is on the right wearing a hat and light colored coat. nbc news has not confirmed the reports. meanwhile, though, a peaceful easter sunday march was canceled over security concerns.

however, hundreds of right wing demonstrators clashed with police at a memorial in brussels. hundreds of riot police pushed the crowd back. water cannons were used to even help disperse the crowd after some demonstrators threw objects at police. nine people were taken in for questioning. dutch authorities arrested a 32-year-old man. now to the race to the white house. what a weekend for bernie. he dominated and continues to put pressure on hillary clinton and for the republicans the intense personal feed between ted cruz and donald trump is not going away any time soon. nbc's jennifer johnson reports.

>> as you notice the narrative over the last week has been what is wrong with the party. >> reporter: but trump is still way ahead of cruz and kasich in the delegate count. the republicans are squaring off tomorrow in the north dakota primary. they have to wait until april 19th for new york but new york may have an uphill battle if this is any indication. check it out. this tombstone reading donald trump made america hate again was found in central park on sunday. it has since been removed. some good news for donald. he's a grandfather again. his daughter ivanka gave birth to baby theodore, her third child with husband jerry kushner. she tweeted out saying my heart is full. #grateful. theodore is the donald's eighth grandchild. millions celebrated easter sunday in colorful fashion.

new york city had the parade. people and pets were decked out in their most festive costume. the creative outfits created down fifth avenue to a tradition that dates back to the 1870s. meanwhile in western pennsylvania a dare devils bunny he landed in some nearby woods but the crowd waited and it was all fun. pez canceled its annual easter hunt after adults misbehaved. organizers said it quickly turned into chaos. parents reportedly ignored staff's instructions shoving people. one woman said an adult pushed her grand child to the ground bloodying the child's nose. pez said they only wanted to do good for the community. >> leave the parents at home. >> just bring the kids. >> absolutely. bill, you are here to tell us

about the weather. >> we are going to look for a nice stretch of weather. we have wild windy conditions. you can see this front kicking through seattle now. when this moves through the winds will howl. high wind warnings for the vegas area. snow in the northern portions of idaho and montana. a pretty good snow storm outside of salt lake city. as far as winds are concerned one problem you also get high critical fire weather. we are under the critical or elevated from arizona through areas of new mexico and western texas. it looks like warnings from just north of el paso to the tucson area. gusty winds, low humidity. this is the time of the year you get brush fires forming. we are looking at winter storm warnings into wyoming.

syrian state media is reporting government forces recaptured the city of palmyra sunday. syrian forces beat back isis forces that had been there since last may. they reported gunfire in the eastern part of the city but the bulk of isis forces had retreated. let's take you to mexico. a volcano in mexico put on a show sunday morning spewing ash 6,500 feet into the air and later on in the afternoon alaska's volcano sent ash up 20,000 feet. mother angelica, founder of catholic tv powerful eternal world television network passed away on sunday. she started in 1921. it was served 250 million homes in 144 countries.

the cause of death was not specified. mother angelica was 92 years old. cops in california caught up with a carjacking suspect in simi valley sunday but when she got out of the vehicle, the suspect tried to hop into the driver's seat of a police cruiser. police stopped her before she was able to get away. police in tampa are looking for car thieves. they took off with eight vehicles. several cars left behind were damaged. so far, though, only two have been recovered. time now to get down to business. >> wall street looks to recover ground after stocks snap weekly streak. lots of economic data this week and all topped off by the monthly jobs report out on
